(Review Of Chaos Battles, by Jex)
When I was downloading Chaos Battles I expected to play a fighting game. When I started the game up I quickly realized that it was not a fighting game.
Was I dissapointed?
No, definitely not.
While playing this game I can not help but think about the game sonic world.
You play as different characters in each level, most of them anyway.
Just like in sonic world.
the game is also much like sonic world but the level design is not as messy.
The game isn't the only thing that reminds me of sonic world though.
The two creators are also alike, Yuski and Julio who both make tons of sprites.
But onto the game itself.
The game starts off very promising.
The first level has a rendered look to it and it reminds me of station square at night.
(in fact when you fight chaos at the end of it it is almost exactly like when you fight him at the beginning of SA.)
As you progress through the levels you will play as other characters (tails and knuckles)
You'll also encounter many cinema screens that move the story along (if there is a story to follow).
The game has 6 levels and 7 bosses total which isn't a lot considering the size of the levels, however it took me about 30-45 minutes to complete the game because there is some challenge.
What was really cool about this game though was the bosses.
After each stage you fight chaos but it isn't a boring boss fight.
Julio opted to use AI which makes the bosses much more fun to battle as they don't move blindly back and forth.
Each boss level must be approached a different way too.
Even though you fight chaos in each stage he doesn't use the same tricks.
You'll have to figure out how to take on each boss.
The graphics in the game are very good, using a mix of fan levels and real ones mixed together.
What amazed me is that while playing there would be many active objects on the screen(mostly in the lava caves) but there wasn't any slowdown.
Most games that I play with active objects have horrible framerates and the game sometimes comes to a complete stop.
The sprites are quite good but knuckles is a bit underframed and whats with the weird shoes?
however the sonic sprite and tails sprites are just fine.
I especially liked Tails' flying animation.
Now...i saved the worst for last.
Every game does have its flaws.
First off this game suffers from the same 'ol problem almost every fangame does--replay.
Once you beat it there really isn't much to do.
I did play it a couple more times to go against the bosses but there aren't any secrets to find.
I hope julio makes a sequel with some other modes like a boss mode or something, a boss time attack maybe.
Replay isn't the only problem with this game though.
Getting through the levels is kind of a hassle since you sometimes have to jump blindly or hop down off a ledge without being able to see whats under you.
This has always been a big problem with fangames.
Luckily it only happened twice.
There was also another occasion in the lava caves where you couldn't figure out where to go and i was stuck so i hopped in the lava to kill myself and realized i could walk in it.
later in the level i got to a point where i couldn't see where to go so i figured i could walk through the lava--i died.
then i saw the platform that wasn't visible from where i would have had to jump.
FANGAME MAKERS.
I BEG YOU, STOP MAKING THESE MISTAKES IN LEVEL DESIGN.
But those are all the flaws....except for the damn jump wav in the hidden palace level--you control sonic while tails and knuckles follow you.
Jump--they jump--they both make the jump sound and unfortunately there's a lot of jumping in that level.
i just have one thing to say about that....
I NEVER WANT TO HEAR THE JUMP WAV AGAIN!!!!!!
Gameplay-9.2 Graphics-9.5 Sound-4.7....STUPID JUMP WAV Music-9.8 Replay-6.5 the bosses saved ya' buddy OVERALL-8.1 (B)
(Review of Chaos Battles by Turbo)
This is certainly not a bad game. However, the game is hindered dramatically by the unbelievable amount of bugs in the sonic and super-sonic zones.
This is due mostly to the Sonic sprite, who has a tendency to get stuck in the ceiling and/or any nearby enemies/objects.
This is most noticable on the final boss who you can, very easily, get trapped inside!
(Graphics)
Use of good combinations of backgrounds and some re-coloured backgrounds make for the hightlight of the game.(Originality)
Pretty original, if it hadn't been for the use of a death egg sprite, which I hate to see used.(Sound)
The sound is ok, using some less-heared music. But the final boss music from Sonic & Knuckles is STILL being used... yes, I am begining to get seriously bored with that midi.
Also, the sound effects were ok.
(Lifespan)
This'll last you for a while, but after you run into the ceiling-stick bug for the 100th time you'll probably go nuts and delete the game... if you have my patience that is ;)(FINAL VERDICT)
If it weren't for the bugs and seeming lack of playtesting I would have given the game a higher score. However, it is a good effort that sadly falls amazingly short of what it could have been if more time had been spent on it fixing the bugs.
OVERALL GRADE: C
(Review Of Chaos Battles, by Mistress Lilith)
The other reviews were wrong! This game is cool!
It follows the SA2 style, since you play as Sonic, Knuckles and Tails.
I didn't find any annoying bug.
Altought another review says that Sonic gets stuck in the ceiling, he doesn't.
The only bug I found was in Hidden Palace, where Knuckles easily gets lost.
BTW, since the game is small I'll put a list of stages:
Starlight City: City Escape style, with Station Square graphics.
You play as Sonic.
The boss is a normal Chaos who follows you with AI.
South Hill (any Fatal Fury influence?): Guess this one is Wild Canyon or maybe Pumpkim Hill... You play as Knuckles.
The boss now can punch.
Spark Plant: First Tails zone.
It looks like his first one in SA2, but there are no badniks and he isn't inside his machine.
The boss is very original: Chaos changes his shape into Sonic and attacks with spins.
Hidden Palace: My favorite!
You play as Sonic, with Tails and Knuckles following you.
Knuckles is very useful because he always tries to go above Sonic and so he kills some badniks in accident.
But he gets lost very easily!
Tails doesn't because he can fly.
I think hidden palace is something like Sonic's second stage in SA2, because you need to rescue Amy.
The boss now flies.
Lava Caves: Here you play as Super Sonic.
Rings decrasing isn't problem, the real problem is the amount of abisms!
Here you need to defeat the flying Chaos, waiting for him to open his shield to shoot and hitting him first.
Sky Paradise: Sky Sanctuary style.
No badniks.
The real problem is the amount of abisms.
My second favorite zone.
Here you need to defeat the flying Chaos again, but now you can't fly.
Last Utopia: The final stage.
It looks easy, but it's tough!
So the only fault is that the game is small.
I liked it, specially the bosses.
Fangamers, when you make a game, remember to put challege in it, not difficulty.
Chaos Battles doesn't have a section where you need to reach the top of the level and if you fall in an aciddent you need to make all the way again.
Also, unlike in other fangames, bosses here are very different.
That's it.
The only fault is the revplay.
Then I give it an A.
(Review of Chaos Battles by TGF Team)
Chaos Battles is an interesting Sonic game. It's challenging and innovative, although it gets old rather quickly.
Levels are done in semi-3D style, but aren't much more than "hold right."
Multiple paths through the levels add some replay value, though.
(Graphics) The graphics are a bit above average.
They're a mix of Sonic and original graphics, and they go nicely together.
Levels are done in a semi-3D form, which is innovative, but you don't see any slopes this way, either.
The Sonic sprite is that Rabidknux SA sprite, which is way overused, and badniks are SEGA - made badniks.
The level graphics even this out, though.
7/10
(Sound) Basic Sonic sounds, like most Sonic fangames. The music is original, in the fact that it isn't from any Sonic games, but it tends to be repetative and boring after awhile.
Better music, and a not-so-loud Jump sound, would've helped this catagory.
5/10
(Presentation) The engine is basic. It's CnC Platform movement all right, with no special moves (not even a Spin move).
Ring loss / death is rather buggy too.
It could've been worked on..
5/10
(Gameplay) I didn't see any sign of a story. You just started the game and began playing.
The levels are designed a bit differently, and are cool looking at first, but once you realize that all you have to do is hold right and press jump once in awhile, the game gets old rather quickly.
Path movement badniks placed all over the level don't really help either.
6/10
(Conclusion) Chaos Battles is an original game, with several paths to take and an interesting semi-3D look, but it gets old quickly, since the landscape is flat. The game isn't that hard either, but you may not bother trying to complete it after playing Level 1.
Overall, the game had some nice ideas, but could've used some serious work before being released.
I give it a

(Review of Chaos Battles by Pelord)
Although the game's title is a bit decieving, the game is basically about Sonic and his friends fighting Chaos, who is apparently trying to drain Chaos Emerald power (since there really isn't a story, it's hard to tell).(Graphics) Most of the graphics are from previous Sonic games, but some of the sprites are custom made sprites.
The Chaos sprite has a transparency and fits quite well with the surroundings.
Other then that, the graphics are basically what you would expect from your standard click engine game.
(Sound) Some good sound effects and music selections are used in the game, but some of the music gets annoying, and when there are two or three characters on the screen at once, the jumping sound will get on your nerves.
I especially found it odd that in one of the cutscenes, a Sonic Anime theme is used, and then the music switches to a theme from Sonic Spinball... talk about your extremes!
I also found the sound clips used after the fight with Chaos in Hidden Palace quite amusing...
(Presentation) The gameplay is basically the same for each stage, which isn't that bad, except that there are three playable characters (Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles), and all three of them play the same.
Not even Super Sonic acts differently from the other characters, except for the boss fight, in which you can move in any direction.
It is possible to get your character stuck in a ceiling or a wall, but pressing buttons can get you out.
Sometimes when you hit an enemy, you go soaring into the air, which is quite odd.
There is a "rings protection" system, but you only lose a few rings at a time, and the rings basically just shoot out of your character and you can't get them back.
(Gameplay) The game has an overall Sonic Adventure 2 feel to it, even though the game was made before SA2, and the game's actual storyline seems to be closer to Sonic Adventure 1.
The boss battles are especially worth it... even though they are all against Chaos (Except the final boss), each fight is different, even though the same rule basically applies, which is to keep hitting Chaos over and over.
The unique features of each stage (such as the "doorways" in the first stage) make each stage slightly different then the others.
About the cinema scenes, although they were a nice touch, they could of used some dialogue.
The game could of been a bit longer, but what is there isn't that bad at all.
(Conclusion) The boss fights make this game worth a look, but the levels inbetween are not too spectacular.
Either the levels are too short, or they have an annoying layout.
Without a doubt there are better games then this one, but you can find much worse.

I know this sounds overly rude but here goes...I hated this game with a passion!
I am actually sorry i wasted my time downloading this piece of horse poo i think this game's maker should be shot at dawn!
Graphics: The grapics where bad to say the least I mean for a first attempt low (VERY low) budget fan game it's semi (Only semi) Okay
Sound: I personally thought the sound was stank'in bad as a Sonic fan i was VERY VERY Unimpressed
Gameplay: The presentation was WEAK!
To the point where i about cried!
That's how freaking bad it was!
Presentation: Oh dear lord where do i begin?
I'd get stuck to platforms, I'd die when there was nothing around and i managed to complete it faster than you could say WTF!
Conclusion: My friend I'm going to do you a favor by saying this don't waste your time downloading this instead use the time to do something important like listening to a snoop dogg CD
MY RATING: 1/10

OK lets start by saying this game looks pretty average. Most of the game are sprites from other sonic games.
This game gets addictive but in reality its not that good.
Graphics: Average.....sprites.......on and on.
You get it its an average fan made game
Sound: Not from sonic games but would fit in sonic games.
The sounds REALLY annoying.
Mute it and forget about it.
Gameplay: Some cut scenes to drive the story forward but the cutscenes aren't that good.
One innovative thing is there are paths leading to secret alleyways in the first level which is pretty cool.
Another cool feature is in one level you control sonic but, tails and knuckles followq you!
Presentation: NO SPECIAL MOVES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
All sonic, tails, and knuckles can do is jump, no climbing, no flying and NO SPINDASH!!!!!!!!!
Conclusion: A very addictive game but the lack of special moves make it just like any other platform game.
It feels like super mario without fireballs.
O one more thing i forgot it gets pretty buggy in some places
MY RATING: 6/10
