(Review of Legendary Sonichaos by Sorok Echidna)
Y'know, I hate it- I mean, absolutely *hate* it- when people describe a fan game (or any part of it) as "perfect".It's just not true.
Heck, not even a Sonic Team game is perfect (just look at all the bugs in SA!), so how can a fan game be?
And yet, it seems that a lot of people staunchly refuse to see the Sonic Chaos series games- especially this latest one, Legendary Sonichaos- as anything less than "perfect".
Now don't get me wrong, I'm not slamming the game or its fans.
LSC is very, very good... but it has its flaws.
When Sonic Chaos (not to be confused with the official Game Gear title of the same name) first came out, people (myself included) were wowed.
It was made in KnP, but that didn't stop it from being great.
It boasted awesome graphics, cool gameplay, and more accurate physics than most fan games of its time.
It was soon followed by Sonic Chaos 2 (which wasn't as good as the original) and SCSA (which just plain sucked).
Since then, the Sonic Chaos (or Sonichaos, whichever you want to call it) series has had its ups and downs- some games have been great, others mediocre- but with each game, Aytac Aksu has come closer and closer to simulating a "real" Sonic game.
Enter Legendary Sonichaos.
The minute you start the game (after you minimize all your windows- for some strange reason, it doesn't like you having any open), you are treated to a cool- albeit somewhat repetitive- intro showing the four characters, and the game storyline.
Then, it's on to the character select screen.
No matter who you pick, the quest is the same: stop what's left of the Death Egg (aargh! not the Death Egg again!) from crashing into the island.
Now, I know I've been very outspoken against "formulaic" fan games; however, you'll also notice that I've said that a formulaic approach is okay *if done well*.
Otherwise, I'd never play SA. :-)
So, does Aytac do it well?
The answer is a resounding yes.
Most of the Sonic elements we find missing in other fan games- such as spin-dashing, flying, wall-climbing, somewhat decent springs, and even changing into Super Sonic with 50 rings- are implemented... albeit not perfectly.
The result of all this is a game which actually plays very well, and doesn't just *look* good.
However, there are still some parts of the game which emphasize flash over substance.
If there's one thing Aytac's good at, it's making people go "wow" or "cool".
In some cases (I'm talking about the series as a whole here), it actually *helps* gameplay.
In some cases, it hurts it.
In most, however, it adds nothing at all (remember the emerald powers from Sonic Chaos 1/2?).
Examples of this include the "atmospheric" sound effects (awesome, and they really add a lot... but they drown out the music) the "getting hit" system (you're flung back normally, and rings scatter all around the level *very* fast- nice effect, Aytac, but how the crap are you supposed to get your rings back?), the "new" spring physics (more on those later), and... Espio ("Ooh! Look at the cool sprite!
Now why can't I do a spin move, spindash, or anything useful?"). Now to the physics.
I can't really review any CnC game without mentioning these, so here goes: They are mostly very, very good. The platforms, in particular, work excellently.
Tails' flight is excellent, and Knuckles' gliding is better than in most fan games.
The spring physics are rather fruity, however: they bounce you very slowly, and then gravity acts very slowly.
It's a very odd effect (the "proper" springing animation is nice, however).
And despite Aytac's obvious attempts to prevent it...
YOU CAN STILL GET STUCK IN WALLS!!
It doesn't happen as often, but it *does* happen (mainly because of Tails' freakin' tails) enough to be annoying...
I have to say just one more thing before I go back to praising this game like everybody else.
This game has no continues.
None.
Zip.
Nada.
There *is* a save feature (your save game is automatically loaded when you select a character) but c'mon! The least Aytac could have done is documented it...
Overall, LSC is a fine piece of work, and sets yet another standard for all other fan game developers to uphold.
But it's *NOT* perfect.
I think it deserves an A.
A nice game- try it out.
Just don't expect it to be as wonderful as everyone says it is.
RATING A
(Review of Legendary SoniChaos by TGF Team)
Most of Aytac Aksu's games are all about gameplay and having fun, and Legendary SoniChaos doesn't let you down. It's way ahead of its time, and is still fun to play, today.
With a decent engine, huge levels, and 4 playable characters, Legendary SoniChaos is a must download for any fangamer.
(Graphics) The graphics aren't new - all SEGA made graphics, including the character sprites.
This isn't necessarily bad, though - Aytac uses all of them together quite nicely, unlike the slop that some throw together.
All 5 characters have plenty of animations, which is nice.
7/10
(Sound) If this game has a real downfall, this is it.Aytac uses basic Sonic sounds and music, and the music corresponds to the level (i.e. Angel Island music to Angel Island level, etc.).
Sounds good, but mostly because SEGA did a good job of this...
The one thing Aytac did add which adds some dimension to the game is add background sound effects.
(i.e. You hear frogs croaking and birds chirping in the Angel Island level).
6/10
(Presentation) All of Aytac's games so far have been about solid gameplay, and Legendary SoniChaos isn't any different. The engine is fairly nice - each character has a Spin Move, Spin Dash Move, and that character's special move (i.e. Tails can fly, Knuckles can glide, etc.).
Nice work.
8/10
(Gameplay) There's an opening cutscene, but otherwise, it's level after level. This isn't bad though, since each level is large and designed fairly well.
The game is all about fun, simple gameplay - don't have to worry about a story here.
Plus, there are 4 playable characters (Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Espio), and Super Sonic is in the game, and that's always a plus!
8/10
(Conclusion) This game is fun to play, and has a decent engine in it as well. While it doesn't really measure up to Aytac's current standards, Legendary SoniChaos is still a decent game, and is fun to see how Aytac's skills have progressed.
Download this one if you have time, or if you're into Sonic fangames.
I rate it
