Mecha Sonic has taken over Mobius and has practically robotisized most of the planet and has also polluted it a whole lot.
The master emerald has been stolen and the floating island is sinking into the ocean with only a few weeks to live.
Black soul, Mecha Sonic's main droid, has been sent to destroy it.
Meanwhile, Mecha Sonic also sent out his troops and his droid in command of his army Gold Sonic.

(Review of Sonic: A F T E R M A T H by Sorok Echidna)
Every once in a while, a fan game comes along that totally redefines the genre, and that gives fan game developers a new standard to live up to.Sonic: The Aftermath is definitely *not* it.
In fact, this is probably the most average fan game I've ever played.
Let's get one thing out of the way right away: by "average", I don't necessarily mean "bad".
As we all know, the word "average", by definition, means "middle"- in this case, *in between* good and bad (although the standards for fan games are markedly different than those for commercial games).
In other words, "blah", so-so, etc.
Another thing to remember is that this demo is very short: just one level, a boss, and some cinematics. Therefore, it's awfully difficult to write a comprehensive review based on this alone.
As you've probably guessed from reading my other reviews, I'm gonna try anyway.
But I can sum the whole thing up in one phrase: If you've played many other fan games, you've played this.
More or less.
I'll start with what counts: the gameplay. Basically, it's like every other fan game, only not as fun.
Sonic can run, jump and climb ladders (no doubt borrowing from Sonic Slam).
There are a few badniks here and there (and yes, I know more will be added later) but, oddly, no ring counter.
In fact, Sonic has no health indicator at all (and therefore cannot be killed) except when facing a boss.
The boss fights are straight out of the early Sonic Y2K series, with health counters and totally predictable boss paths.
In short, you've seen this all before.
Essentially, Aftermath uses every fan game "convention" in the book, as well as "borrowing" from other sources.
Here's a rundown of the stuff I haven't mentioned yet:
- The "Hyper Scapes" intro clearly takes music from the Sonic: Fate of Mobius demo.
- The storyline deals with a takeover of Mobius by hostile forces (namely a bunch of differently colored Metal/Silver Sonic sprites), and deals with the "aftermath" of such a takeover.
(Epoch rip-off alert!)
- Various "conventional" MIDIs are used throughout the game: the Sonic 3 final boss, Doomsday, that Lava Reef remix, and let's not forget the obligatory Collision Chaos Bad Future for the "villain HQ" scenes...
- The game opens with scrolling text detailing the beginning of the story.
I have a feeling that this corny intro method will refuse to die for a long, long time...
- There are some so-so hand-drawn graphics, which clash with the "real" artwork (how many times have we seen *that* before?).
Again, don't get me wrong: Aftermath is *not* a terrible game; in fact, you really could do much, much worse (Sonic Adventure 2D comes to mind).
And, if you really *are* looking for just more of the same, you may want to try Aftermath out.
But if (like me) you're looking for something fresh, new and different, you won't find it here.
