(Review of Sonichaos by Buzz Bomber)
Okay, so maybe I started about half-way into the series of Sonic Ultra games…But does Doc.
'Botnik actually make a big appearance here?
Graphics: All the characters are, wisely enough from the SFG home page.
Great stuff, then.
Or, is it?
Well, to be perfectly honest, no.
I noticed that, come Lava Reef 2, Sonic has lost his ear, Leo Da Vinci style.
Yet, in Sky Chase 1, the next bit, it's back!
I really don't take a liking to games where it's not necessary for Sonic, or the other characters for that matter, to break into a run after two paces.
It's very difficult to control the sprites that way and can be quite annoying.
What makes said sprites worse is when they are excruciatingly bumpy.
SUandDR succeeds on both of those bad points.
Each sprite has 2 walk frames, Tails and Knuckles have ONE running frame, and Knuckles' walk is really his push!
It looks awful.
Sonic may have more than one run frame, but it's TOO FLIPPIN' FAST!!!
Sheesh!
After the news that SEGA will make games for Ninty, I can only hope that when I get a GBA, my copy of Sonic Advance won't have 3 frames of movement…
Sonic and Knuckles have 2 frames for a jump, which isn't too bad if you only want to jump to the left and thus get nowhere, but if you want to jump right, it's like a backflip!
Tails has 1 jump frame and that one, once again, commits the cardinal sin of Tails in games…ALWAYS make sure that if you are going to make a game with Tails in, it will have his tails following him when he jumps.
They're his namesake fer cryin' out loud!!!
There ARE sprites like these I am referring to.
Fiddlesticks, you are truly the sprite master, yet no-one appreciates your work!
I'm sorry, but if you wanna make a game, there is no alternative to the sprites of Fiddlesticks.
Why can you see through Dinobot?
You will nearly be BLINDED in the Starlight Zone, thanks to the backgrounds.
Lastly (Written a fair bit here, haven't I?)
would you care to quickly play Sonic1?
Please prove me wrong by saying that a Crabmeat has 1 frame altogether, doesn't look awful and can walk through walls, on spikes and in thin air. Ithangyew!
Sound: Okay, the sound is pretty good.
However, we've heard it ALL before…
In my games, I'm going to put Sonic, Mario, Pokémon, EWJ, ZELDA and many more in!
Here, we only have a selection of Sonic tunes!
I mean, come on!
Let's have some originality, here!
However, it doesn't actually sound awful, so I'll let it off, but next time it'll go on it's criminal record!
Sound effects- Ring, Badnik Bustin', PC Monitor, hit- all present. Jump?
Oh, no.
Gameplay: Not too good.
Remember how I said the sprites were fiddly?
Well here, that's a catastrophe.
Dodgily placed platforms all over the shop.
Spring Yard Zone- ARGH!!!
Great Zone- where are the springs?!?!?!?!
Welcome to the most annoying Zone, ever.
And, forgive me if I'm wrong, but there are 7 Chaos Emeralds (Sonic's), 7 Super Emeralds (Knuckles') and 1 Master Emerald.
Here, there are countless Super and Master Emeralds.
When you hit the goal, is there a victory sign THAT WOULD MAYBE GIVE EXTRA MARKS FOR NOVELTY ARE YOU PAYING ATTENTION (Some original ones would be nice, please)???
Oh, no.
You simply slow down.
Pathetic.
The bonus stage is slightly fun, but also irritating.
And, really, it adds nothing at all to the gameplay.
The Bottom Line So- Crap Graphics, Poor Gameplay and average Sound.
What can I say?
Oh, and to answer the question I provided in the opener, no.
Doctor Robotnik comes in 3 pathetic, predictable forms on a set paths that are way too easy to guess.
Bad.
SUandDR- write "I Must try harder" 500 times and have it on my desk for tomorrow morning!!!
This is a very hard to recommend game.
Be warned.
